A recent incident highlighted just how dangerous the border with Mexico can be, and it was only one in a series of violent attacks on Border Patrol agents by foreign nationals.

According to a report from KVEO in Brownsville, Texas, a Border Patrol agent working in the Rio Grande Valley was attacked by an illegal immigrant he was trying to arrest for crossing the border without authorization.

KVEO says that “Border Patrol agents continue to encounter assaultive subjects while conducting operations in the Rio Grande Valley,” which is in addition to numerous drug busts made in the area as well.

This past week, an agent from the Rio Grande City station ran into an illegal immigrant while on patrol. The immigrant became combative and violent when the agent tried to place him into custody. The man, who was later identified to be from Guatemala, took a swing at the agent and then kicked the agent numerous times in an effort to escape. The agent managed to get the upper hand and took the illegal immigrant into custody.

The agent was not seriously injured.

The man will be handed over to ICE for prosecution.

Border Patrol agents have their hands full handing criminals at the border, and that includes American citizens. Last week, within a 72-hour period, two American citizens were arrested on child sexual assault warrants as they tried to cross the border.

During the same time period last week, Border Patrol agents disrupted five attempted drug smuggling attempts in the Rio Grande area. Nearly 1,000 pounds of marijuana worth $770,000 was seized, and several smugglers were arrested.
