Minnesota Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar is criticizing the nation of Israel, even as the country has endured over 700 rocket attacks from militant Palestinian group Hamas in the Gaza region.
The outspoken congresswoman even went so far as to promote a claim that Israel killed a pregnant Palestinian woman and her young niece with a retaliatory missile strike. Soon after, however, the truth came out, which destroyed Omar’s narrative that Israel is an irresponsible aggressor.
First, as the rockets were raining down on innocent Israeli civilians, Omar posted a carefully worded response.
“How many more protesters must be shot, rockets must be fired, and little kids must be killed until the endless cycle of violence ends,” she tweeted as the rocket attacks continued over the weekend. “The status quo of occupation and humanitarian crisis in Gaza is unsustainable. Only real justice can bring about security and lasting peace.”

Unlike other politicians (including some Democrats) who criticized the actions of Hamas, Omar refused to criticize the terrorists, and instead directed the blame towards Israel. Her comments are not directed at the Israelis under attack, but instead mentions Palestinian civilians being shot, a dubious claim according to the Israeli army.
Israel claims that it has only opened fire on protesters who were armed or posed a violent threat. Palestinian activists claim Israel is shooting at unarmed protesters, a claim that has not been fully verified.
Omar also makes note of Israel’s “occupation” of Gaza, but Israel counters that they rightfully took the land in self defense, and only after Palestine attacked Israel.
Rep. Omar continued to criticize Israel and ignore the rocket threat, going so far as to retweet a claim that Israel killed a pregnant woman and her baby niece over the weekend.
The Minnesota Democrat, who is a practicing Muslim, retweeted Mehdi Hasan, a pro-Palestinian columnist who appears on Al Jazeera. Hasan responded to Democratic Senator Kyrsten Sinema’s condemnation of the Palestinian rocket attacks by claiming “A pregnant Palestinian woman and her baby niece were killed in Gaza – do you condemn their deaths and their (Israeli) killers, Senator? If not, why not?”
However, this claim fell apart quickly, after it became clear that Israel had conducted no strikes in the area. Israel then announced that the rocket explosion that killed the pregnant woman and child was actually a Palestinian rocket that misfired and killed its own people. Major media outlets even refused to report the claim that Israel was responsible, given the strong evidence that other Palestinians were, in fact, to blame.
Ilhan Omar never walked back the tweet and did not delete it. She also never provided any additional information or context. Hasan did respond to the news, claiming that Israel was lying and continuing to claim that it was an Israeli rocket.
“I see the Israeli army is blaming an alleged Hamas ‘misfire’ in this particular incident,” he tweeted. “The IDF has a long history of covering up war crimes in Gaza. But even if they’re correct, wider point stands: why are US senators not condemning Israeli attacks on Palestinian civilians?”
Omar has been no stranger to controversy when it comes to Israel. She has a disturbing history of anti-Semetic comments, including this past February in which she was condemned by members of her own party for a series of anti-Jewish tweets.
Omar’s recent tweets against Israel didn’t go unanswered.

Fellow Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) had perhaps the most on-point criticism of Omar.
1. Hamas controls Gaza.
2. Hamas is firing rockets at civilians in Israel. 3. @IlhanMN is defending Hamas. Real question is how many times will @IlhanMN rush to the defense of terrorists? https://t.co/mrKQBz1TDa

Omar continues to remain defiant in her position. She retweeted another pro-Hamas statement today, again from Mehdi Hasan.
Israel still controls Gaza's borders, seawaters, airspace& population registry. Israel still blockades Gaza. Israel still occupies Gaza, according to the UN. Israel still kills unarmed Palestinian protesters, including children, with impunity.
