A man is dead after authorities say he attempted to scale the U.S. border wall with Mexico and fell.
Although the man has not been identified by name publicly, it appears authorities know who he is, as they said he was a 26-year-old Mexican national.
The incident happened at approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday night in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Sheriff’s deputies in Doña Ana County found the body of the man at the base of the border wall.
Sensors placed along the border wall alerted authorities of movement in the area, and when they went to investigate, his body was found, an investigator told ABC-7.
According to a report from the U.S. Border Patrol, their agents arrived at the scene of the reported movement, and found the man face-down and unresponsive near the base of the border wall.
Border Patrol believes the man had managed to climb the border wall in an attempt to enter the country illegally. During his attempt, however, he somehow fell from the top, hitting the ground with such force that he sustained ultimately fatal injuries.
The man attempted to climb the border wall along N.M. Highway 9 at mile marker 142.
The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the man’s death.
Investigators are currently working with both the Border Patrol and the Mexican consulate to contact and notify the man’s family in Mexico.
Although deaths are rare, injuries in falls from the border wall by migrants attempting to climb it are common. This video, from December of 2018, captured two teenage girls attempting to climb the wall and enter the United States illegally. The first girl fell and broke several vertebrae in a violent fall. The second suffered a broken ankle when she fell.
Note: some may find the video disturbing.
