A crew member aboard a fishing vessel is dead, after being attacked by an illegal immigrant working on the boat with him.
The victim, who has not yet been identified, was aboard the fishing vessel Captain Billy Haver, which was working about 55 miles off of the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The suspect, 27-year-old Franklin Freddy Meave Vazquez, is a Mexican national in the United States illegally. He was working alongside the victim when he took a knife and a hammer and attacked him.
It is not yet known what caused Vazquez to turn violent, but after killing the victim, he also attacked two other crew members before trying to escape by climbing the ship’s mast.
The Coast Guard responded to a call for help from the Virginia-based ship, and took Vazquez into custody. He now faces one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.
A Boston-based spokesman says the Coast Guard a received a distress call Sunday afternoon from the 83-foot fishing trawler, reporting the attack.
A German cruise ship, the Mein Schiff 6, responded to an emergency call and took two injured crewmembers aboard. The ship’s doctor pronounced one dead.
The Seaford, Virginia-based fishing trawler, the cruise ship and a Coast Guard cutter headed to Boston. The Coast Guard placed a law enforcement team on board the fishing vessel.
The Captain Billy Haver docked in Boston Monday evening. Federal investigators were seen donning clean suits and going aboard to search the crime scene.
Vazquez faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted of the murder.
According to a criminal complaint, Vazquez is in the United States illegally. He was also arrested in Newport News, Virginia in March for abduction, the document said.
Vazquez was released from the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on April 23.
