Instagram Says Wounded Veteran’s Pic with Trump Jr. ‘Violated Community Standards’

Instagram is under fire for deleting a post by a wounded veteran, which featured a picture with Donald Trump Jr., saying it violated their “community standards.” It launched a massive outcry, including criticism of Instagram by Trump Jr. himself.

Earlier this week, Army veteran Omar Avila posted a picture of himself with the President’s oldest son at a National Rifle Association event. Soon after, however, the post was taken down, and Avila was told it was because the post “violated community standards.”

Avila is a verified Instagram personality, which makes the removal of the post very unusual. “I honestly don’t know why this picture was taken down by Instagram,” Avila wrote later, after he reposted the picture. “Not sure what guidelines it violates, But here we go again…Thank you @donaldjtrumpjr for always taking the time out your busy schedule to say hello to chat. #maga #trump2020 #trump.”

This time, the post has stayed on Instagram, likely because of the viral backlash the post removal received.

Here is Avila’s repost of the picture.

Avila is known for the sacrifices he made during the Iraq War. He was inspired to join the Army after the September 11 terrorist attacks, and joined when he was 18. While on patrol in the town of Adhamiyah, his Humvee was hit with an IED.

Another soldier in the Humvee with him was killed instantly, and with the Humvee on fire and his surviving friends taking fire, Avila climbed into the turrent and began providing cover fire from 30 to 40 armed insurgents. He continued firing, even as he caught fire from the burning Humvee.

“I was aware of being on fire, but was far more concerned about the other guys,” Avila later said. He eventually jumped from the Humvee after grenades and bullets inside began exploding from the fire. He broke both his legs in the leap from the Humvee, and his fellow soldiers eventually put out the flames on his body.

Omar Avila was placed in a medically-induced coma for three months, suffering third and fourth degree burns on 75% of his body. Part of his right leg was amputated, and yet he survived, still bearing the scars and pain of that day.

And yet, Instagram felt it necessary to delete his picture. That earned a furious response from Donald Trump Jr., who reposted the picture and blasted the social media network.

“INSTAGRAM IS AT IT AGAIN WITH THEIR BIAS DELETING POSTS,” Trump Jr. wrote. “This time they deleted my friend @crispy11b’s post that was simply a post of him and I catching up at the NRA show. There was nothing harsh or political in there and as usual it magically somehow “violated @Instagram standards”, presumably because I’m in it and that’s too much for the social media gods in California.”

“Omar aka Crispy is a vet severely wounded in conflict who has undergone I believe over 100 surgeries to fix the damage done,” he continued. “He’s been a vocal supporter of other wounded vets and an inspiration to so many because despite everything he manages to live his life to the fullest. His adventures often documented right here are amazing and I’ve never once seen anything but an incredible attitude towards life despite the obvious difficulties.”

“This man is amazing and he should not be censored, in fact we would be better off as a nation with many more with his attitude, demeanor, and patriotism. I suggest you give him a follow. The bullshit has to stop. If Instagram can censor a hero like this who the hell won’t they suppress??? #america #hero #censorship.”
