VIDEO: Dozens of Homes Near Boston Destroyed by Gas Explosions

A number of large gas explosions have destroyed dozens of homes and other structures in suburbs near the Boston area. 

One person is dead and at least 13 others are injured, while thousands have been forced to flee their homes.

The explosions have taken place in the towns of Lawrence, North Andover and Andover. Fire and rescue crews from Massachusetts and New Hampshire have been called on to assist, as dozens of fires and explosions have been reported across a number of locations.

One report says 60 to 100 homes are on fire in the Merrimack Valley. Early reports say the explosions are tied to a high-pressure gas line running through the towns, but it is not clear how the line malfunctioned or caused the explosions.

Residents across the area are being ordered to turn off their gas and evacuate.

One media report says the entire town of North Andover is being ordered to evacuate.

Boston 25 News reports that four people have been injured so far in the explosions.

Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon says there are 20 to 25 homes on fire in Lawrence. Solomon, who’s in Lawrence, says there are so many fires “you can’t even see the sky.”

The Eagle-Tribune newspaper in North Andover reports at least one home has been demolished and several others have caught fire amid a problem with a gas line that feeds homes in Andover, North Andover and Lawrence.

Massachusetts State Police say troopers are responding to the area to help secure areas after “multiple suspected gas explosions.”

Lawrence Police Chief Roy Vasque told The Eagle-Tribune that he’s “never seen anything like this.”

Massachusetts State Police have provided few details so far, tweeting only that “MSP Troopers on scene, more responding, to Lawrence/Andover/North Andover to assist with scene security and traffic control after multiple suspected gas explosions and structure fires. Developing.”
