The 19-year-old man responsible for a San Diego synagogue shooting on Saturday hated Muslims and Jews, and despised President Donald Trump for supporting Jewish people and the state of Israel.
John Earnest killed Lori Gilbert-Kaye, 60, in the shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue in San Diego. Three other people were injured, including Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, and two visitors from Israel: 34-year-old Almog Peretz and his eight-year-old niece.
The shooter was stopped in his rampage by an off-duty border patrol officer who was in the synagogue.
Earnest posted a manifesto online before the shooting, showing him to be seriously disturbed mentally. He voiced a hatred for both Jews and Muslims, and admitted to setting a fire at a mosque in Escondido, California in March. That crime had gone unsolved. He claimed to be inspired by the man who killed 50 in mosque shootings in New Zealand in March.
The shooter claimed his goal was to give the U.S. government a reason to begin confiscating guns, the same goal as the New Zealand shooter. After the Christchurch shooting, the New Zealand government issued new restrictions on gun ownership.
He also wrote in the manifesto that he hated President Donald Trump, calling him “Jew-loving” and “anti-White.” President Trump’s son-in-law and advisor Jared Kushner is Jewish, and his daughter Ivanka converted to the Jewish faith. The President has also been a vocal supporter of Israel, which angered the shooter.
The shooter’s manifesto also included a number of contradictory rants. He claimed to be a Christian, and then claimed he should murder Jews and Muslims. ‘My god understands why I did what I did,’ the manifesto read. He claims Jews were responsible for killing Jesus Christ, a contradiction in the basic beliefs of the Christian faith, which say the sins of all were responsible for the crucifixion of sacrifice of Christ.
He also claimed Jews controlled the media and deserved to die. “Every Jew young and old has contributed to these,” he reportedly wrote. “For these crimes they deserve nothing but hell. I will send them there.” The shooter is a native of California and a nursing student at California State University – San Marcos.
