Trump Scores Big Court Victory in Immigration Battle – Deportations to Continue

President Donald Trump has scored a victory for his immigration policy in one of the most unlikely of places: the liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The President himself responded to the victory this morning, via Twitter.

Late Tuesday, the Ninth Circuit ruled that the Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, which sent asylum seekers to Mexico to await their court hearing, was legally sound.

A number of left-wing immigration groups, including the ACLU, had sued the Trump administration, saying the policy violated the rights of asylum seekers.

The ruling is a surprising one, considering the history of the Ninth Circuit’s decisions. Famous for its liberal philosophy, the Ninth has ruled against the Trump administration on immigration policy in the past. In 2017, they infamously ruled against the “Trump Travel Ban,” which blocked visitors from certain countries that did not properly screen travelers.

The “Remain in Mexico” policy effectively ended the current “catch and release” policy, and sent asylum seekers back to Mexico while they awaited to have their claims adjudicated.

Many asylum seekers who were released from custody never appeared at their court date, and disappeared into America.

The Ninth Circuit ruling overturned a previous decision by San Francisco Judge Richard Seeborg, who blocked the “Remain in Mexico” policy.

Judge Seeborg had ruled that the Trump immigration policy was unfair, and immigrants were put at personal risk by having to remain in Mexico for an undetermined amount of time.

A lower court is still reviewing the policy, and their ruling on it will likely be appealed past the Ninth Circuit to the Supreme Court.

According to The Daily Caller, The Washington Post reported that the White House ordered asylum officers to be tougher with applicants, flagging inconsistencies in their claims about having credible fear in their home countries.

The President has said the policy was meant to stop the abuse of loopholes in the current asylum policy.

The President responded to the court victory on Twitter. “Big Court win at our SOuthern Border!” he declared.

Over the weekend, the President announced his choice to lead ICE, Mark Morgan. Morgan still has to be confirmed.

Until Morgan is confirmed, Trump voiced his support for the acting director of ICE, Matt Albence.

While the court decision will be reviewed, the Trump immigration policy at the border will continue to be enforced.
